Now that I'm freelance, I'm trying to do a bunch of stuff during my day. I'm trying my best to keep ink on my hands and I'm working on the next issue of my mini comic "dog comix".

here's a comic page done for th' fun of it! straight outta my brainpan and onto th' bristol. i used my koh-i-noor artpen for everythin', even the borders and letterin'! i like to switch back and forth between that and my trusty and crusty ol' hunts #513. i started usin' sumi black ink 'cause th' higgins eternal black ink wasn't truly waterproof and would bleed when i used whiteout for corrections! no editorial input. no better ideas on how to draw it. just me. just fine...

I'm in the June '09 issue of WWE Kids Magazine! I would've written sooner if I had remembered to contact my gracious design director and see when the job was printed. I used to do a lot of "ghosting" other styles when I was at Cracked, so it was fun to get the chance to try it again. I did all of them except for the "Goodnight, Kane" spoof.

PopGun Volume 4

I just finished up a two page color strip for PopGun Volume 4. It's such a creative joy to do this work. They pretty much let me do anything. And I do! At work the artist does not have the last say in a creative project. Everyone has input and things they would like to have included in a piece of art. I realize that and accept it. It's part of the job. I don't own the company I work for. Fine, but every now and then you'll get a chance to do something that's completely all you, all yours. What a wonderful feeling! The PopGun books are great because it's being published by one of the bigger and better comic book companies and there are a lot of other fantastic artists and writers that are also involved.

Mini-comix allow you that opportunity as well. Doing something that you want to do, on a much smaller level.

So, anyway, here's the first panel of my comic. After it's published I'll post the whole thing. I've been told that it won't be out until December or January, but I'll bet that it's worth the wait!

In the mid to late '80's. I did some mini comics and I loved'em. It was fun, spontaneous, and a great creative outlet. My pal, George Erling, who was one of the founding fathers of the newave mini-comix revolution in the late '70's and '80's introduced me to the art form. He also recently told me that Fantagraphics Books is going to put out a collection of '80's mini comix, and I'm hoping to be a part of it. Here's the finished comic page that appears in Image Comics' PopGun Vol.2 which is out in only the best comic book establishments across the country. I got my copy a couple of weeks ago and there's some truly amazing stuff inside. Working on a 2 page comic for Vol. 3!
By the way, Friggit was created way back in elementary school. Our art class assignment was to create a cartoon character. I was so impressed with myself and couldn't understand why my parents hesitated and winced when I showed them my latest creation on the classroom wall. Ah, the innocence of youth...

great Deitch comics and interviews

If you haven't picked up the "all Deitch" issue of the Comics Journal #292, you're missing one great read! It's a bunch of interviews with Gene, Kim, Simon and Seth Deitch. As of this writing, I've read Gene, Kim and Simon's interviews. Just starting Seth's. One interesting point that Gene and Gary Groth made about Kim's work was that it was a "hard sell". I can understand what they meant by this, but if want to read some really great comics by a true underground master of cartooning, go buy Deitch's Pictorama!! I can't think of any other cartoonist from Kim's era that is still producing this much work (with the exception of Bill Griffith's Zippy comic strips). I didn't know much about Simon and Seth Deitch, but found Simon's interview to be very interesting. I look forward to reading Seth's.
Deitch's Pictorama has wonderful comics and stories by the three Deitch boys. Kim's "Sunshine Girl" is amazing. He weaves this fantastic tale about bottle cap collecting that incorporates his Sunshine Girl character and makes you actually believe there really was such a bottle cap. "The Cop On The Beat" is another great story, part autobiographical and part historical.
I had seen some of Simon's "Golem" art in Mineshaft magazine and was impressed with his draftsmanship. Great pencil illustrations. I'd like to see what his stuff would look like if he inked it.
I enjoyed Seth's "Children of Aruf" and "Unlikely Hours" stories. "Children of Aruf" was an interesting story about man's best friend with a twist. Kim illustrated "Unlikely Hours" and I thought the text and art worked well together.

My scanner's down, but I still wanted to post somethin' since it's been so long. Here's a couple of older pieces. Beatnik was done when I had a booth at the Licensing Show in NY. Obvious Gene Deitch influence. The surf dog was done for The Children's Place many years ago as a graphic t-shirt. The original was in color but here's the black and white linework. I think I used a black Prismacolor pencil instead of ink. You actually do get a nice rough line with the Pris. For the finished I might've even "streamlined" it in Illustrator. That's all for now...

hey kids,
it's been a while posting. been trying to keep on with a sketchbook lately, due to rediscovering robert crumb and wanting to keep my hand in shape. most of my art at work is done using a mouse (never in a million years would i have thought this) and i want to keep my "pencil/inking" hand good. i've also been trying to not do any pencils, like crumb,and keep it spontaneous. not using a rapidograph, but an .03 micron pen. i love'em! this page started with the startled dog and prgressed from there, without any planning.

Popgun Volume One

Hey Fellow Bloggers/Cartoonists/Comic Book fans,
The Popgun Volume One anthology from Image Comics is coming out today. A stellar line-up inside!! You may ask why I'm plugging this fine funny book. I'm plugging this wonderful first issue because I will be in Popgun Volume 2. Doesn't that make sense to you? Anyway, go out and purchase this pulse pounding publication! Anyone who wants me in their book can't be all bad, huh?

Here's the hype, true believer:

The 29th of November will see Image Comics release the graphic mix
tape entitled Popgun. This 400+ page behemoth of awesome will feature
only the freshest selection of sequential styling by new upcoming
creators and creators new to the medium; it will even feature a select
few veteran creators producing something new and different to what you
would previously associate them with.

Popgun aims to deliver something for everyone by targeting the larger
pop spectrum as opposed to the usual niche comics market. It was
approached with the mindset of developing the ultimate comic book mix
tape; a diverse and sophisticated collection of work with which to
attract new readers and infect mainstream pop culture with comics.

Here's a new comic, "dog comix" doggone sayings page I recently did between paying work when I could. In the late '80's, I did a bunch of "dog comix" mini comics through High School Comics (a couple of kids I met at a con) who were looking to "publish" my stuff. It was all in good fun and I did other mini comic stuff for a while back then.
